Founder & CEO

Alfred Buang Mabena

Mountain Breeze was built from hands-on site experience. Alfred’s role connects leadership with the realities of the work: understanding the scope, coordinating the team and taking responsibility for delivery.

Before establishing Mountain Breeze in 2005, Alfred worked as an acting supervisor at H & H Civils from 2002 to 2005 and gained municipal project experience through the EPWP. The business grew from these practical foundations into water and sanitation, agricultural structures, roads and building works. Its later mining portfolio includes MCC 28, school ablutions, laundry facilities and civil works during mine shutdowns at Glencore Rhovan.

Today, that experience extends to ongoing Sibanye-Stillwater work in Rustenburg and Marikana, alongside municipal maintenance. The two ongoing building and civil packages at these sites have a combined listed contract value of R18.17 million excluding VAT. Together with its completed infrastructure record, this work reflects the scale and multidisciplinary responsibility Mountain Breeze has grown to undertake.

Approach

Capability shaped by demanding work.

01 / Civil works during mine shutdowns

At Glencore Rhovan, Mountain Breeze carried out reinforced-concrete and earthworks packages under mine shutdown conditions between 2021 and 2023. Live operational constraints called for detailed planning, careful sequencing and coordination with mining production activities. This experience complements the company’s work on MCC 28, laundry facilities and school infrastructure.

02 / Health and safety in daily practice

Safety is part of preparing and supervising the work. The company’s approach includes hazard identification, ongoing risk assessment, task-specific method statements, toolbox talks and permit-to-work controls. An internal safety representative and specialist safety-planning support help address client requirements, PPE and access control across live operational sites.

03 / Delivery through the COVID period

Mountain Breeze’s technical record since 2020 includes delivery through the disruption of the national COVID-19 shutdown period. MCC 28, delivered across 2020–2021, combined bulk earthworks, reinforced concrete, structural steel and building works. The wider portfolio reflects experience coordinating several disciplines under operational and pandemic constraints.

04 / Hygiene-sensitive infrastructure

The Berseba Piggery project in 2022 combined bulk earthworks and reinforced-concrete structures. Delivery required attention to agricultural infrastructure standards and hygiene-sensitive construction methods. Alongside municipal water, sanitation and maintenance work, this shows how the team adapts its construction approach to a facility’s purpose and operating requirements.

Our team / 10 permanent staff

The people behind the work.

01 / Leadership grounded in site work

Alfred Buang Mabena leads Mountain Breeze as founder and managing director. An artisan plumber with supervisory experience before establishing the business in 2005, he brings a practical understanding of construction to company leadership. His background connects the decisions made at management level with the people, sequencing and conditions on site.

02 / Administration & people

Mrs S. Mabena is listed in the company profile as administration manager, with an N6 qualification in Human Resources. Mountain Breeze has a core of 10 permanent staff, supported by site labour engaged for project requirements. This structure brings administration, management and the site workforce together around the demands of each contract.

03 / Site management & technical skills

The company profile identifies C. de Beer in site management, with earthworks, pipeline and quantity-surveying experience. Surveying capability is also listed, supported by a National Diploma in Civil Engineering. Together, these disciplines support the setting out, coordination and measurement involved in translating a construction scope into work on the ground.

04 / Dedicated safety responsibility

P. Ntseki is identified as the company’s health and safety representative. Internal safety responsibility is complemented by specialist support for safety planning. This gives health and safety a defined place within the team, alongside site management and administration, and supports the preparation required for client-specific controls and demanding operational environments.
